The community of Endlovini informal settlement is calling on the City of Cape Town to remove the mounting rubbish along the busy Mew Way Road.
Incensed residents say the rubbish is a health hazard and causes a lot of stench in the area.
It has been over three weeks since the last collection, according to the residents.
While the blame has been put on the shoulders of the City, residents also criticise local leaders for failing to take remedial actions.
A resident, who calls himself Shakes said Mew Way had become a dumping zone, with rubbish in every spot.
“I don’t know what happened to the people who used to clean the area. We don’t see them anymore. I realised earlier last week, while coming from work, that there is a problem here,” said Shakes.
He stated it was the first time, in a long time, that residents faced such a challenge.
He said two years ago, council workers stopped cleaning without anyone informing the community. (“Rubbish left to pile up”, City Vision, 05 August 2021).
A meat vendor along the road, who only described herself as MaMbongo, said the dirt affects their businesses, with customers dwindling.
“It’s been almost a month since the rubbish was not collected. It causes flies and unbearable stench,” she stated.
MaMbongo said the conditions are deteriorating daily, with most dumping happening at night.
