Kosovo informal settlement residents in Samora Machel are searching for the mother of a newborn baby that was dumped in the rubbish along White Heart Street on Friday 16 June.
The deceased was discovered by passersby who alerted the community.
One of the community members, who witnessed the incident, Nolundi, said they would go all out to search for the perpetrator. She said the deceased was a fully-grown baby.
“I don’t know the gender, but it was a full baby. I suspect that the mother had given birth and later killed the baby, or the baby died at birth,” said Nolundi, adding that it might happen that the incident did not happen in Kosovo.
According to her, someone from Samora or Heinz Park might have dumped the baby and fled.
When City Vision spoke with Nolundi on Friday 16 June, she said the women from Kosovo planned to call all the females to ascertain the mother.
“I don’t think they will find the perpetrator now. She is gone already.
They said they are going to check all the females’ breasts if they do not have milk. So, they will squeeze their breasts for the milk to come out,” she said, adding that those who already have children will bring them.
Provincial police spokesperson W/O Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the incident, citing that Samora Machel police responded to a complaint on Thursday 15 June and upon arrival, they found the body of a newborn baby in a rubbish dump.
Swartbooi said the victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel.
He said Samora Machel police registered an inquest for investigation.
