Western Cape police have implemented a 72 hour activation plan to probe the circumstances surrounding the murder of three people and the attempted murder of two on Sunday 5 June in Gugulethu.
The shooting occurred around 20:00. No arrests have yet been made.
Col Andre Traut, the provincial police spokesperson, said the occupants of a white Toyota Corolla opened fire at a group of five people on the corners of Malunga Street and NY8. Three people died and two were injured in the incident.
“Two males aged 30 and 35 and a female aged 23 got fatal injuries while two males aged 32 and 33 sustained gunshot wounds and were admitted to a medical facility. Arrests are yet to be made and the motive is yet to be determined,” he said.
Gugulethu Development Forum spokesperson Lumkile Mzukwa said the incident left the community frightened and traumatised. He said they are calling on the law enforcement agencies to investigate the crime.
“We need the report as soon as possible in terms of who are the perpetrators of these crimes. We are mindful as the forum that our communities are savagely affected by the ills of huge unemployment, drug abuse and poverty. It is unfortunate that in all these socio-economic challenges that need our attention we also have these gunshots happening. We are not sure at the moment if it is gangster related, or extortion related, hence we want the report of this investigation,” said Mzukwa.
Traut said an appeal is made to the public to approach the police with information anonymously by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or by using the My SAPS mobile application.
