Siyahlala informal settlement residents in Browns Farm, Philippi, are horrified after siblings were hacked to death in their shack on Monday 22 January.
The motive for the killing unknown.
Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) secretary Dumisani Qwebe said the incident devastated the community.
“It was terrible. The deceased are siblings. The incident occurred at about midnight. It is alleged that the perpetrators forcefully opened the door and hacked them with sharp objects,” said Qwebe.
He said the man died at the scene, while his sister died on the way to hospital.
“His skull was fractured and the brain was scattered on the floor. And the girl was seriously injured. We are trying to ascertain what caused the incident, because it seems the perpetrators knew the victims,” he explained.
Qwebe urged the community to unite against crime and urged against politicising it.
He stated that crime has no colour.
“We are appealing to all community stakeholders to stand together against crime.
“We need to come together and strategise a way forward to stop crime in the area,” he stated.
He declared Browns Farm one of the Cape Flats’ most dangerous areas.
He mentioned carjacking, murder, gender-based violence and robbery as some of the cases are always reported to the police station.
Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk confirmed the incident and said that Nyanga police registered two counts of murder following the attack in Mlalandle Road, Browns Farm.
Van Wyk didn’t specify what happened, but stated that the incident occurred at 01: 40.
He said the officers discovered the victims – a 26-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman.
“They were found with multiple head and body injuries. The female victim passed away later in hospital. Circumstances surrounding their death are under investigation,” said Van Wyk, adding that the motive is still under investigation and no arrests have been made.
