“God never forgets his promises”, those are the words of Sisonke Educare Centre principal Nandipha Nkomo after she received new equipment for the centre.
The equipment was donated by the Gift of the Givers on Friday 3 February after the centre’s storeroom caught fire on Sunday 29 January.
The storeroom was among 10 shacks destroyed by the shack fire when more than 25 people were left homeless.
The donation included 20 mattresses, 15 fleece blankets, seven nappy packets, sanitary towels, stationery and groceries.
Nkomo said she was delighted with the material. She applauded the local ward councillor for assisting.
“The whole thing came at the right time. I was struggling with how to feed the children as some of the groceries were there. All the stuff I received will make a change at the centre,” said Nkomo.
She said the centre is home to 55 children during the week.
Ward 37 councillor Sandile Martin expressed his gratitude to the Gift of the Givers for the support. He described the centre as “very helpful” to the community.
“We see the centre as a safe place to keep the children. As a community, we always prioritise the needs of the children because we want them to be safe. It is for that reason I saw it important to assist where I can,” said Martin.
He urged the community to stay vigilant during the load shedding.
“People must ensure that they take off all the plugs during the load shedding because they don’t know what will happen when the power comes back,” he concluded.
