In a powerful demonstration of solidarity against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Octotel and Cell C joined forces with The Justice Desk. Together, they hosted a GBV Awareness Workshop in Gugulethu.

This initiative reinforces their commitment to driving education, awareness, and action in the fight against GBV.

Furthermore, it supports the national call to combat GBV year-round.

Octotel, a committed supporter of The Justice Desk, provides free connectivity to amplify their advocacy, education, and empowerment mission. This ensures access to critical information for vulnerable communities.

“We believe in empowering young people with knowledge and practical tools. These tools help recognise, prevent, and respond effectively to the alarming rates of GBV and Femicide (GBVF) in South Africa. For students at Tembaletu, who face unique challenges, this session was designed to be engaging and impactful,” says Octotel CSR team lead, Carly Beth.

Concerns raised

Tembaletu School raised concerns about the vulnerability of its students.

These students face heightened risks in their communities.

Also, there are challenges in navigating relationships and understanding sexual education.

The initiative aimed to equip students with knowledge and confidence. It also aimed to give them the ability to advocate for themselves.

Led by The Justice Desk, the session provided age-appropriate insights. These included identifying GBV, understanding consent, setting boundaries, and knowing where to seek help.

Discussions also addressed various forms of abuse. This helped students develop a clearer understanding of how to protect themselves and others.

“The training went incredibly well with the learners of Tembaletu. We explored how students can actively contribute to ending violence. We focused on boundaries and consent—concepts that are crucial in fostering a culture of respect and safety,” says Nicholas Tlatlane, programs manager at The Justice Desk Africa.

Open dialogue encouraged

To encourage open dialogue, students participated in smaller, interactive group discussions for more personalised engagement. By integrating children into shared conversations, the session fostered mutual understanding, respect, and collective responsibility in addressing GBV.

“Today was an incredible experience! The topics were relevant to the issues we see daily at Tembaletu. It was inspiring to see our students engage so actively. They weren’t just listening. They were sharing their experiences and showing that they understood the weight of these conversations,” says an educator at the school.

Recognising that true change extends beyond the school gates, Octotel and Cell C are already in discussions to expand the initiative into a community-wide movement. Future sessions will involve parents, guardians, and local leaders. This is to create a broader, more sustainable impact.

“We are thrilled to be part of this initiative. The success of this session has motivated us to continue working alongside Octotel to expand this initiative further,” says Pash, regional manager for Cell C Fibre in the Western Cape.

This initiative is more than just a workshop—it’s a movement. By equipping students with the tools to recognise and combat GBV, Octotel and Cell C are nurturing a culture of awareness, advocacy, and proactive change.

Their commitment ensures that every student, every community, and every voice is empowered to stand against violence and champion a future free from fear.
