Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) in Nyanga condemned the killing of taxi operators in that vicinity, saying the shooting had to stop. A taxi driver was gunned down near Siyahlala informal settlement in Philippi on Saturday 10 February.

CATA spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi said the association was disturbed by these incidents and urged law-enforcement agencies to act against the perpetrators. He urged them not to leave any stone unturned.

He described as baseless rumours that CATA drivers alone were perpetrating this latest wave of taxi violence.

“There is a problem among the taxi operators operating from Nyanga to Cape Town. But we don’t know who is attacking our members, and most drivers under attack are on that route. It is almost a month now that our drivers are getting shot while on it.”

Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said Nyanga police registered a murder case following a shooting incident on Saturday 10 February at 08:07 on the corner of Sheffield and Moonwood Drive at Brown’s Farm, Philippi.

“According to reports police were called out to a shooting incident at the above-mentioned address, where they found the body of a 20-year-old male lying on the driver’s side with multiple gunshot wounds to the body,” said Van Wyk. “The motive seems to be possibly taxi-related.” The unknown suspect(s) fled the scene and had yet to be arrested, he added, and the circumstances surrounding the incident were under investigation.
