The Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) in Nyanga has distanced itself from the incident where two people died and five were injured in what the police suspect was a vigilante attack at Nyanga taxi rank on Wednesday.
It is alleged that, following the beating, the taxi drivers took the two deceased and three other injured people, put them in a Toyota Avanza, and later dumped them near Mkhonto informal settlement.
CATA spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi denied the allegations.
He said he was not at the taxi rank on Wednesday.
“I did not hear anything like that. I was not at the taxi rank on Wednesday, but I believe if there was such a thing, they would have informed me,” said Sityebi.
However, Nyanga Community Policing Forum secretary Dumisani Qwebe stated that according to information from the community, the two deceased and three other injured people had been dumped near the rubbish container at Mkhonto by an Avanza.
Adding that the other two injured victims were left at the taxi rank, Qwebe said:
He stated that all the victims, including those killed, were from Crossroads.
Qwebe added that the motive for the incident was still unknown.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, confirmed the incident, saying provincial detectives had opened a case of murder and attempted murder.
She said a total of seven men had been assaulted at the Nyanga taxi rank.
“The assault led to the death of two of the men, aged 23 and 26. Meanwhile, five of the victims between the ages of 15 and 27, who were seriously injured, are fighting for their lives in a local hospital,” Potelwa said.
She added that the circumstances surrounding the incident were under investigation, and that detectives were following up on all leads.
