The Cape
Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) is reeling following the shooting and
killing of two members in Langa yesterday (15 June).
They were
reportedly gunned down near a local retailer while sitting in their vehicle at
King Langalibalele Drive.
CATA spokesperson
Nkululeko Sityebi said, as the association, they are still shocked. He refused
to speculate the motive for the attack and urged the law enforcement officers
to leave no stone unturned to bring perpetrators to book.
“It has become
a norm for our members to die from bullets in Langa. Two months ago, some of
our members were gunned down in the area. Even now, as leaders of the
association are trying to ascertain the main cause of these shootings,”
said Sityebi. However, he did not specify the number of the killed members. He
stated that, as an association, they are sending sincere condolences to the
affected families.
Provincial police
spokesperson W/O Joseph Swartbooi said circumstances surrounding the incident
are still under investigation. He said Langa officers are investigating two
counts of murder.
Swartbooi said
officers responded to a complaint on Thursday 15 June, and drove to Zone 16,
where the long-distance taxis are parking.
” Upon arrival
at the crime scene they found the bodies of two males inside a white double cab
Toyota Hilux who sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their bodies. The victims
were declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel,” he said.
Swartbooi said
unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.
