Taxi driver shot and killed, another injured in shooting incident in Philippi

A taxi driver was shot and killed while a passenger was injured during an incident on Ngulube Road, Philippi, on Sunday 11 September.


A taxi driver was shot and killed while a passenger was injured during an incident on Ngulube Road, Philippi, on Sunday 11 September.

The injured passenger was taken to hospital.  

Provincial police spokesperson Capt Frederick van Wyk confirmed the incident.

According to him, a 42-year-old man was shot and killedand another man was injured. The incident happened around 15:30.

“The injured victim was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. A murder and attempted murder case has been opened for investigation. The deceased (driver) died inside the taxi,” said Wyk.

Nkululeko Sityebi, Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) spokesperson, distanced the association from the incident.

“The taxi is from the Eastern Cape. It doesn’t belong to our organisation. We don’t know whether the attack is associated with the taxi industry or was just pure crime,” he said, adding that they don’t tolerate crime.
