A 39-year-old man,
who is a third suspect in the murder of Loyiso Mabandla, has died. He was
arrested in Peddie, in the Eastern Cape on Thursday 16 November and was scheduled to appear
in the East London Magistrates Court on Friday 17 November.
However, he was
found dead in his holding cell in the morning.
Western Cape Hawks
spokesperson Lt-Cl Siyabulela Vukubi said there was no suspected foul play. He
added the man died of a “heart attack”.
His arrest stems from an incident that occurred on 17 April, where Mabandla was killed in a hail of bullets at Philippi railway station. It is believed that Mabandla was targeted for his role in talks to clear Metrorail’s Central Line, where families had built their homes.
The other to suspects, Zukisa
Tshabile (38) and Mziyanda Mdlungu (38) are due to appear in the Athlone
Magistrates’ Court in connection with the murder.
Mdlungu appeared on Monday 20 November, while Tshabile’s next appearance will be on Thursday 15
February next year.
