Mfuleni residents are distraught after three men were shot and killed while sitting in a vehicle in Abundance Street, New Beginnings, Mfuleni on Tuesday 3 October. The motive is still unknown and a case of murder was opened.

Speaking to City Vision on condition of anonymity, for fear of victimisation, a community leader said crime in the area was getting out of hand and appealed to the police to intervene.

“It is clear the incident was well orchestrated,” the leader said. “According to eyewitnesses the VW Polo vehicle was parked on the side of the street. A Toyota Avanza came along, parked alongside it and opened fire, then it moved forward and made a U-turn. The perpetrators got out of the car, walked across and shot again before fleeing the scene.” The community leader bemoaned lack of police visibility in the area and urged Minister of Police Bheki Cele to deploy more officers to the area.

“It is believed six armed men approached the three victims, aged 29, 30 and 44, around 15:00, while they were sitting in their vehicle at Fountain Heads in New Beginnings, Mfuleni and opened fire, killing all three on the scene. The suspects fled in a Toyota Avanza and have yet to be apprehended.”
