Nyanga police are investigating a double murder and five attempted murder cases following a shooting incident that took place at Mau-Mau in Nyanga on Saturday 28 January.
The motive is still unknown.
Provincial police spokesperson Lt-Col Malcolm Pojie said preliminary information indicates that the officers responded to a shooting incident at about 00:50 on Saturday at 2nd Avenue Nyanga.
“Upon their arrival they discovered that one person was already deceased while the other six were transported to a local hospital, all suffering multiple gunshot wounds to their upper bodies.
“Further information revealed that a second victim succumbed to multiple gunshot injuries later that same morning at about 04:00,” said Pojie.
According to Pojie three victims were discharged later in the day and two were transferred to Groote Schuur Hospital.
He stated that the circumstances surrounding the incident and the motive form part of the probe.
Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) secretary Dumisani Qwebe said they were shocked by the incident.
He stated that they are trying to establish the motive for the attack.
“We don’t know what really happened. But, as community leaders, we will convene a meeting during the week to try and find out what was the motive for the killing,” he said.
Qwebe stated that fighting is not a solution. He called on people to solve their disputes amicably.
“Our concern is, maybe the family or friends of the victims will want to retaliate and it ends up becoming a war. We want to stop it now. Killing or fighting is not a solution,” said Qwebe.
