Gugulethu residents are living in fear following a shooting incident that claimed two lives at NY102 on Sunday 20 March.
A third person is reportedly recovering in hospital.
The motive for the killing is unknown, but according to word on the streets it is a love triangle. The victims, a female and two males, were reportedly sitting in a backyard shack when two men entered and started shooting them. The woman, who is believed to be from Stellenbosch, was shot in the stomach. One of the men was shot several times in the head and the back. He died on the scene. His friend was shot in the chest. They were both rushed to KTC Day hospital. The man also died in hospital, while the woman was transferred to Groote Schuur Hospital.
A resident who only described herself as MaJali said the shooting happened in broad daylight. And the perpetrators took iphela to get away from the area.
“Two unknown men went into a shack at the back and opened fire on the people inside. There were three people in the shack (two men and a girl). The girl was shot in the stomach, one of the guys was shot in the chest and another one was shot several times in the head and at the back and died on the scene,” she said, adding that the other two victims were rushed to KTC Day Hospital.
MaJali claimed the girl was visiting her boyfriend. She emphasised that there were rumours that were circulating citing that the culprits were from Stellenbosch.
“After the shooting there are people who said they saw two unknown guys coming out from the house walking and stopped iphela at NY78 and left,” she said.
Gugulethu Police Station spokesperson Sgt Sindisiwe Ngqele confirmed the incident. She said a case of attempted murder and murder have been opened.
Ngqele said two people died and one was seriously injured. “When police arrived on the scene there was a woman who was shot in the stomach, a man was shot in the chest and the other guy who was sitting on the bed had multiple bullet wounds in the head and in his body,” said Ngqele.
She said the other two people who were injured were rushed to the clinic and on their arrival the guy died and the lady was transferred to Groot Schuur.
She reiterated MaJali’s sentiments that the motive for killing was a girlfriend. “The girl that was shot was from Khayamandi in Stellenbosch. She was dating one of the deceased who was named as Siphesehle (27) the one was shot in the head several times. The suspect is also from Khayamandi,” said Ngqele adding that no arrest has been made yet.
