Two people have been shot and killed by unknown men at the corner of New Eisleben and Sheffield Roads in Philippi earlier today (Wednesday 5 July).
Information received from the scene suggests suspects came from a white Toyota Avanza and went straight to the victim’s car and shot them several times before they fled.
The motive behind the shooting is unknown.
One of the victims died inside the car sitting in the driver’s seat, while the other, who was in the passenger’s seat, was gunned down a few metres away from the vehicle. He tried to escape.
An eyewitness, who is anonymous for security reasons, said he saw two men who were carrying firearms shooting at the victim’s car.
“Everything happened so fast. I heard gunshots. There were more than 20 gunshots that were fired. I ran for cover and left my stuff there on the pavement,” he said.
He said the victim’s car, a Toyota Conquest, hit the Avanza from behind and that the suspects’ car collided with an oncoming minibus taxi.
When City Vision arrived on the scene, all three vehicles involved were still there.
The suspects’ vehicle was squeezed between the victims’ car and the minibus taxi.
There were more than 15 bullet holes visible in the victims’ vehicle.
Capt Granville Meyer, the Philippi-East police station spokesperson, said a double-murder case has been opened.
No arrests have yet been made and the case is still under investigation.
