Two men shot dead in VE informal settlement

The Khayelitsha Community Policing Forum (CPF) says although death is unacceptable, they no longer get shocked by shootings at Site B.

The Khayelitsha Community Policing Forum (CPF) says although death is unacceptable, they no longer get shocked by shootings at Site B.

The remarks follow the shooting of two men, at VE informal settlement on Friday evening 1 July.

The two men were shot and killed by unknown assailants.

It is believed the shooting followed a commotion at a local tavern. However, the motive for the killing remains unclear and the suspects are still at large.

Although she was not aware of the shooting, CPF chair Noliyema Swartbooi said such incidents do not come as a shock to the local community and safety structures anymore.

“It is the first time I hear about this incident, but we are no longer getting shocked at all.

“Though the killing of people is unacceptable, it has become something familiar in our area,” she said.

Khayelitsha’s acting station Commander, Col Umavathie Ramesh confirmed the incident.

“Police have opened two cases of murder in connection with the shooting and killing of two men in the area of VE. The assailants are yet to be apprehended and the motive of this murder is unknown at this stage,” she said.

Ramesh urged the community to come forward with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects.

Anyone with information can contact Ramesh directly at 082 469 1309.
