The Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) has lambasted the brazen attack and killing of an unidentified man in Mau-Mau last week.
The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was gunned down on Friday 16 September next to the newly built houses along Govan Mbeki Drive next to Junxtion Mall.
According to reports, the man was shot several times and died on the spot.
Provincial police spokesperson W/O Joseph Swaartbooi stated that Nyanga police attended to the scene.
“On their arrival at the scene in Zwelitsha Drive at around 11:15 they found the body a male who sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. The unknown suspects who fled the scene are yet to be arrested,” he said. According to Swaartbooi, Nyanga police are investigating a murder case.
However, the killing has raised the ire of the community with calls for more police to be deployed in the area.
A resident who only described himself as Doc, for fear of reprisal, labelled the incident as traumatic.
The resident from Black City said he heard the gunshots while he was at Junxtion Mall.
“I was at the mall when I heard the gunshots. There were close to 10 shots and the deceased died on the scene. The deceased’s body was covered with blood,” he said, adding that most of the wounds were to the head.
He said it is alleged that the deceased was robbed of his cellphone before he was killed. “I don’t think it was robbery. They took the cellphone because the perpetrators wanted to deceive us. If it was just a pure robbery they wouldn’t shoot him many times. One or two bullets would be fine,” he said.
Doc stated that they needed more police visibility in the community.
Nyanga CPF secretary Dumisani Qwebe stated that according to the information they received, the deceased was shot by his friends after they had an argument.
“The deceased was from New Crossroads. We don’t know him, but as the Nyanga CPF condemn the killing of people or anything that is crime related,” he said, adding that the incident has nothing to do with the construction of the new houses.
