Langa police are investigating a murder case after a man was shot and killed allegedly after disembarking from a taxi.
Circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear. It is alleged an unknown man was dropped off by a taxi at Mavunka Street between Settlers (Phase 1) and Joe Slovo informal settlement on Saturday 13 January. Shots were then fired from the taxi killing the man instantly.
A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the incident as bizarre. He appealed to anyone with information to come forward.
“According to the information we received from the public, the deceased got out of a taxi. He (deceased) was still standing next to it when he got shot by the people driving the same taxi. We don’t know what happened,” he said.
While he hailed the festive season for being peaceful, he condemned the surge of crime prior and post the December holidays.
“The whole of December was quiet – nothing reported. As soon as people come back from holidays they started to kill each other again. We are appealing to whatever disagreement people have, they must learn to resolve it peacefully,” he urged.
Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said Langa police registered a murder following a shooting incident at about 13:15. “According to reports, officers attended the complaint at the mentioned address and found one unknown male lying in the road on his back with a gunshot wound to the head. The motive and suspect/s is currently unknown,” said Van Wyk.
