At least 25 people were left homeless at New Flats in Langa after their homes were gutted by fire on Sunday 27 April. Eight flats were affected during the incident at Block L 5.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Victim Boniswa Minyani said she lost all her belongings during the incident.

“I lost everything in the fire. My whole house was damaged. I don’t know where to start. I also don’t have a place to sleep,” she said, adding that she was away when the fire started.

She urged the City to assist them to rebuild their houses.

Ward 51 councillor Lwazi Pakade described the incident as terrible. He stated that the victims stayed with families and friends.

“The fire destroyed almost everything in the affected flats and left 25 people displaced. We are appealing to the community to donate whatever they have to assist the victims,” he said, adding that those who wanted to help to visit the councillor’s office.

The City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse confirmed the incident.

Two fire engines were dispatched after a distress call was received at 15:50, he added. He said two flats were destroyed and 16 people left displaced.

“There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire is unknown,” said Carelse.
