In an effort to raise awareness about disability, members of Metro East Forum had a fun walk from Nothemba Warehouse to Eyethu on Thursday 30 November.
The forum is made up of various disability groups in the Metro.
The event organiser Bulelani Soko described the event as part of celebrating disability month which started on Friday 03 November until Sunday 03 December.
He said the aim was to highlight the plight of people living with disabilities.
“We want the people of Khayelitsha to see that there are people living with disabilities in the area.
“We want the community to accept them as part of the community. We are appealing to the communities to stop discriminating against them,” said Soko.
He described the forum as a voice of the voiceless.
“The forum is a safe space for people living with disabilities. We have challenges of discrimination at work. They are not treated equally with able people. Sometimes, when they go for interviews, the employers prefer able people to them. And some government buildings are not user-friendly for them,” he explained.
Thembisa Gova from Nothemba Warehouse for the Disabled described the occasion as a special day.
She said they wanted the communities to recognise and accept them.
Gova said the fun walk allowed them to raise their concerns. “As people living with disabilities, we want to tell people that we are here to stay. They must accept us and stop discriminating against us. Parents must stop locking their children indoors. We are also human and we want to be treated as such,” said Gova.
