In an effort to promote arts and culture at Ward 86 in Lwandle, the area held a festival at Nomzamo Community Hall on Saturday 4 November.

The event, which comprised different types of art, was called Ward 86 Arts and Culture Festival.

The event organiser Pumla Sikunana- Mbadlisa described the occasion as a second annual event.

She said the main objective was to give young artists a platform to showcase their talent.

The entertainment included dance, painting, choral music, individual and group singing, poetry and drama.

“We are very grateful for the support that we received from the community. The number of people attending the event is growing even though some of the artists failed to attend for various reasons,” she said.

Sikunana-Mbadlisa said they wanted to be part of the change in the area. She said as local artists wanted to have an influence on growing their local economy.

Ward councillor Xolani Diniso reiterated Pumla’s sentiments that the festival was a platform for young artists to showcase their talent. He said it was great to see them under one roof sharing a stage and ideas.

He stated the councillor’s office spent at least R50 000 towards the event from the ward allocation budget.

“We want to support and encourage them on what they are doing. We also want other young artists in the ward to join us in order for our festival to grow,” said Diniso.

Intsikazokhanyo manager Michael Xelelo praised the event organisers and ward councillor for doing a stunning job.

Intsikazokhanyo is a music company that produces choral and acappella music.

He said the festival gave them an opportunity to interact with other local artists.

“This is not only about performing but showing value in what we are doing. It also gave us an exposure to the community,” he said.
