Following a mini collapse of the Zenzile Road bridge in Kuyasa early this year, motorists have welcomed its re-opening.

The public are pleased with the new revamped Welcome Zenzile Road link after it was officially opened last month.

The R4,6 million road caused an outcry from the community after it crumbled down, two months after completion

The use of the road had to be temporarily restricted after a portion of the embankment was eroded by a sewage spill caused by a blockage in the overloaded sewage system.

The road links Ndlulamthi Street in Khayelitsha with Ntlolokshane Street in Kuyasa. It is 280 m long and elevated by 5 m.

Motorist Sinazo Mbindela praised the City for speedily fixing the bridge. She stated that it would make their lives easy.

“The City does what it does best to put the community first. The bridge is wide open enough. And we save a lot of time and energy instead of going around Oscar Mpetha Road,” said Mbindela. She urged the City to closely monitor the sub-contractors to avoid shoddy work.

The City’s mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas said the new road links two communities of Kuyasa and Khayelitsha, which were previously separated by a storm water channel.

“I am happy to see that the remedial works are finally completed and the road now fully operational, meaning the residents can now again reap the benefits of this road link. These include better access for motorists and pedestrians between the two areas and significant improvement in terms of health and safety for the communities that were using this open space as a short cut,” said Quintas adding that the communities can now enjoy social connection. The officials have assured me that they have tested the structural integrity of the link and that it is now safe and secured to last for many years to come,” said Quintas.

He expressed his gratitude to the community for their patience while they were doing the repair work.
