While Women’s Month celebrations continue, the Khayelitsha community is reeling following the killing of a woman at 42 Section, in Makhaza.
The 47-year-old woman was shot and killed in her house on Monday 15 August.
Harare Police Station spokesperson Capt Siyabulela Vukubi said police are investigating a case of murder. The incident happened around 21:00.
“It is alleged that an unknown suspect gained entry at the victim’s house and produced a firearm, shooting the victim multiple times. The victim succumbed to death on the scene” he said.
Vukubi said, according to witnesses, nothing was taken from the house as the suspect walked away after the shooting.
He said police have since opened a murder docket.
Harare Community Policing Forum (CPF) described the shooting as “cowardice”.
CPF chair Funeka Soldaat says gun toting criminals have planted fear in communities with the ongoing killings.
Soldaat said these developments were “scary”, especially being committed in a month dedicated to women.
“As neighbourhood watches in these communities we also need men to be involved because in most cases women are in the majority.
“Women should be celebrating what they have achieved not such atrocities to be committed in their month,” she said.
“The easily availability of firearms in our communities is a huge concern to us. Someone, given the responsibility to get rid of guns need to do that to ensure harmony in our areas,” said Soldaat.
She questioned the role of intelligence in the country because it seems easy for one to get a firearm whether they have licence for it or not
The suspect is yet to be arrested and police request anyone with information to contact crime stop at 0860010111
